Implementing a winning online Gin Rummy strategy involves mathematics, memory and strategic game play. Gin Rummy is one of the most skill-based games of all Rummy variations, especially when more than 2 players are participating.

Players of Gin Rummy online must consider a few factors that go into a good Gin Rummy Strategy. First of all, there are 15,820,024,220 (that's almost 16-billion!) possible 10-card combinations a player can be dealt. For this reason, consistency in hand development and game play goes right out the window. Players must rely on probable odds and memory to win at Gin Rummy.

Gin Rummy Strategy - Consistency Factor

There are a few factors in Gin Rummy that are always constant.

  1. There are 13 possible Sets (3 or 4 cards of equal value) in a single hand of Gin Rummy. (A-A-A, 2-2-2 ... Q-Q-Q, K-K-K)
  2. There are 44 possible Runs (3 cards in sequence, same-suit) in a single hand of Gin Rummy.
  3. It is much easier to extend a Melded Run than a Melded Set. Runs can usually extend in two directions where a Set of 3 can only be built with the exact, equal value card. This makes it twice as likely to extend a Run than a Set.

Gin Rummy Strategy - Watch Your Opponent

Always pay close attention to what your opponent is discarding. There are several reasons to be not only aware of what is being discarded, but to remember what has been discarded previously.
  • Know what Melds to Develop: Remembering what has been discarded throughout the game will tell you whether or not to collect a Meld. For example, if the 5-of-hearts is in the Open (Discard) Pile, keeping a 4-of-hearts and 6-of-hearts in hopes of a Run would be pointless. Keeping 5's for a Set would also be more difficult. You may hold 2 5's already, but chances are, if your opponent has another 5, he may be using it to create a Run of his own.
  • Know what is Safe to Discard: Watching your opponent's discards can tell you what cards are the safest to discard back to him. For example, if you opponent discards a 6, he is not collecting a Set of 6's. If that 6 is a heart, he is likely not collecting a Run of hearts in the vicinity of a 6 - it is likely safe to discard a 5 or 7 of hearts. (There is an exception to this rule - see Gin Rummy Strategy - Baiting your Opponent below).
  • Know what Builders to Keep: Always remember what cards your opponent picks up from the Open Pile. This will help you not to give him more helpful cards while allowing you to keep cards to Build onto his Melds once they are down. For example, if your opponent picks up a 7 of hearts, he is either collecting a Set of 7's or a Run of hearts. Discarding a 5, 6, 8 or 9 of hearts would be a bad idea until you can gather more information from the opponent's discards and Open Pile pick-ups.
  • Combining the Above Knowledge: When a player successfully uses the 3 Gin Rummy Strategy Tips listed above, he has a much higher chance of winning at Gin Rummy. The first tip explains remembering what your opponent has discarded. Combine that with the third tip to determine exactly what your opponent is collecting. For example, if your opponent has discarded a 7 in the earlier rounds of the hand, then picks up a 7 of hearts, you can be fairly certain he is collecting a Run of mid-level hearts, not a Set of 7's.

Gin Rummy Strategy - Baiting Your Opponent

An essential skill in Gin Rummy is baiting your opponent. In the same token, a player must be sure not to let himself be baited by his opponent. Baiting your opponent is used to collect the cards needed to form a complete Run. A good example of baiting your opponent would be done in the following manner. For this example, we'll say Bob and Tom are the players. Bob's Hand: 2h, 2c, 3d, 5d, 6c, 7s, 8s, Jh, Jd, Ks Tom's Hand: Ac, 2d, 3h, 3d, 6s, 7d, 9c, 10h, Qd, Kh On Bob's first turn, he discards the 6c (6 of clubs). The reason for this is to draw a discard of 6s from his opponent - the card needed to complete a Run of 6s-7s-8s. Since Tom now knows Bob is not collecting a Set of 6's, and Tom does not need the 6 he is holding, he may be inclined to discard the 6s. This is an example of successful baiting. Baiting can be done with Sets as well. Notice that Bob has a 2h and 2c. If Bob discards the 3d, Tom will be led to believe that 1) Bob is not collecting 3's, and 2) Bob is not collecting a low Run of diamonds. This makes it seem safe to discard Tom's 3h or 2d. While 3h is safe, the 2d would complete Bob's Set. Baiting is most commonly done in the first 3 or 4 rounds of play, so be careful not to fall for your opponent's bait!

Gin Rummy Strategy - Lucky Number Seven

The 7 is the most useful card in Gin Rummy. 7 is the most common card used to Build on Runs. If you know that your opponent is collecting a particular suit, and you have the 7 of that same suit, keep it! Chances are you will be able to Build on his Meld once it is placed on the table.

Gin Rummy Strategy - Key Points to Winning

  1. Score and Knock as quickly as possible
  2. Anticipate 'Baits' - do not discard any cards that fall near the Run or Set of your opponent's first 4 discards.
  3. When nearing the end of a match, play by the points needed to win. If your opponent is significantly nearer to victory than you, go for highest points by Going Gin. If you are nearer to victory, keep it that way by going for straight points alone. Do not hold onto your melds and allow your opponent to gain an advantage.

When playing Gin Rummy Online, strategies can be added for best results. This is especially handy when playing Gin Rummy online for real money. Use the following tips for the best winning strategy.
  1. Take Notes! Playing Gin Rummy online means you can write down every card a player discards. Take advantage of this by opening a NotePad file, or simply using pen and paper to keep track of all discards.
  2. Go For Fast Points. Always gain points as quickly as possible by knocking. Drawing out a long game in hopes of a 25 point bonus for Going Gin is not usually worth the effort. Score and Knock as quickly as possible.
  3. The average online Gin Rummy game lasts from 1/2 to 2/3 of the deck used. When possible, knock earlier than this for a major point scoring advantage.
  4. Once the deck begins running low, it is likely your opponent will knock soon. If you suspect this, get rid of your high-value cards in exchange for low-draw cards.
