The History of Gin Rummy

Gin Rummy was derived from an earlier Rummy variation called Knock Rummy. The concept of Gin Rummy was created in 1909 by Elwood T. Baker, a teacher at the time in Brooklyn, New York. Baker chose the name Gin Rummy on a suggestion from his son, who played on the compatibility of alcohol related names, Gin and Rum - Gin Rummy.

The history of Gin Rummy reveals it as an off-and-on fad game throughout the early to mid 1900's. From 1927 to 1930, Gin Rummy was very popular. Afterwards, it all but disappeared from existence until 1940. Gin Rummy found its way into the film industry and saw an overwhelming resurgence from 1941 to 1946.

Since that time, the history of Gin Rummy reveals it as a game played mostly among friends and family, by fanatics of the game. Other variations of Rummy have commonly taken over in popularity.
