Online Rummy Strategy

Implementing a winning online Rummy strategy involves a good memory and strategic game play. There are many variations of Rummy games, but Traditional Rummy, though not the most popular online Rummy variation, can be very exciting and fun to play - as well as easy to win if you play your cards right.

Players of Rummy online must consider a few factors that go into a good winning Rummy Strategy. For starters, consistency in hand development is not an option. There are 15,820,024,220 (that's almost 16-billion!) possible 10-card combinations a player can be dealt. Players must rely on probable odds and good memory to win at Rummy.

Rummy Strategy - Consistent Factors

The following factors are always a constant in the game of Rummy. Knowing these factors can help a player build the right Melds, increasing the odds of winning at Rummy.

  1. There are 13 possible Sets (3 or 4 cards of equal value) in a single hand of Rummy. (A-A-A, 2-2-2 ... Q-Q-Q, K-K-K)

  2. There are 44 possible Runs (3 cards in sequence, same-suit) in a single hand of Rummy.

  3. It is consistently easier to extend a Melded Run than a Melded Set. Runs often extend in two directions where a Set of 3 can only be built with a single, same value card. This makes it twice as likely to extend a Run than a Set.

Rummy Strategy - Watch Your Opponent

Always pay very close attention to your opponents' maneuvers. This includes what they discard, what they pick up from the Open Pile, and what they choose not to pick up from the Open Pile. These can give you key insights as to what your opponents are planning, as well as what you should be planning.

  • Know what Melds to Develop: If you remember what each opponent has discarded throughout the Rummy game, you will have a better idea what to Melds to build. There is only one standard 52-card deck used in Rummy, so if a card is lost in the Open Pile, it cannot be retrieved. Therefore, if you're collecting a Set of 9's, and a 9 is lost, the chances of getting the 3rd 9 you need is greatly reduced. Should two 9's be lost in the Open Pile, a Set of 9's becomes impossible. The same goes for building a Run. For this reason, it is not recommended to build on a Run that is missing a middle card. Instead collect open-ended Runs so there are two cards that can complete the Run. (Example: 4h-5h, not 4h-6h)

  • Know what is Safe to Discard: Keeping a close watch on your opponent's discards will give you a better idea of what is safe to throw onto the Open Pile. If he discards a 6, he is not collecting a Set of 6's. However, the suit of the 6 should be noted, as he may be 'baiting' you. (See 'Rummy Strategy - Baiting Your Opponent' below.) If the 6 is a Club, do not discard a 5 or 7 of Clubs, as this may be what your opponent is collecting and baiting you for. Instead, discarding a 5 or 7 of any other suit would be safer. Discarding a 6 would be even safer yet.

  • Know what Builders to Keep: Remembering what your opponents have taken from the Open Pile will let you know what cards not to give them, as well as what builders you should hold onto. Players are able to lay Melds on the table at any time throughout the game, so it may be beneficial to you Going Out to keep a card you're fairly certain will build onto your opponent's Melds.

  • Combining the Above Knowledge: By combining the 3 Rummy Strategy Tips above, a player can gain even more knowledge about their opponent's hand. This is where a very good memory comes into play. For example, remembering that your opponent has discarded a 5 earlier in the game, combined with watching that same opponent pick up a 5-of-Spades from the Open Pile later on, tells you they are not collecting a Set of 5's, but rather a Run of mid-level Spades. Now you know not to discard a mid-level Spade, but that it is likely safe to discard a 5.

Rummy Strategy - Baiting Your Opponent

An essential skill in any Rummy game is baiting your opponent. In the same token, a player must be sure not to let himself be baited by his opponent. By successfully baiting your opponent, a player can collect the exact cards needed to complete a Meld.

A good example of baiting your opponent would be done in the following manner. For this example, we'll say Jane and Jeff are the players.

Jane's Hand: 2h, 2c, 3d, 5d, 6c, 7s, 8s, Jh, Jd, Ks

Jeff's Hand: Ac, 2d, 3h, 3d, 6s, 7d, 9c, 10h, Qd, Kh

(Reference: h=heart, c=club, d=diamond, s=spade)

On Jane's first turn, she discards the 6c. The reason for this is to encourage a discard of 6s from Jeff - the card needed to complete Jane's Run of 6s-7s-8s. Since Jeff now knows Jane is not collecting a Set of 6's, and Jeff does not need the 6s in his hand, he may be more inclined to discard the 6s. This is a perfect example of successful baiting.

Baiting can be done with Sets as well.

Notice that Jane has a 2h and 2c. If Jane discards the 3d, Jeff will be led to believe 2 things - 1) Jane is not collecting 3's, and 2) Jane is not collecting a low Run of diamonds. This makes it seem safe for Jeff to discard his 3h or 2d. While 3h would be safe, the 2d would complete Jane's Set of 2's. Jane has created bait with 50% accuracy.

Of course, your opponent having the exact card you need comes into play as well, but when it works, it's a great trick!

Baiting is most commonly done in the first 3 or 4 rounds of play, so watch closely and be careful not to fall for your opponent's bait!

Rummy Strategy - Lucky Number Seven

The most widely used card in Rummy is the 7 because it is used more often in Melded Runs than any other card. It is generally a bad idea to discard any 7 unless you know it is safe to do so. Holding onto 7's usually allows a player to build onto other player's Runs. Collecting a Set of 7's is almost impossible, therefore should be avoided.

Rummy Strategy - Key Points to Winning

  1. Build Strong Melds: When possible, only collect for Melds that are close to completion. If you are unsure what to discard, choose the card that is least likely to fall into a Meld. For example, 7s-7h-8h-9c, which to you discard? The 7's are close to a Set, the hearts are close to a Run, discard the 9c.

  2. Going Rummy: If you can gather enough information on your opponent's during the first could of hands, you should be able to determine whether it is a good idea to Go Rummy, or simply get your Melds onto the table as quickly as possible in hopes of Going Out.

  3. Anticipate Baits: Do not discard any cards that fall near the Run or Set of your opponent's first 4 discards.

  4. Don't Get Greedy: When nearing the end of a match, play for the points needed to win. If your opponent is significantly nearer to victory than you, go for highest points by Going Rummy if feasible, otherwise try to Go Out fast enough to avoid the opponent collecting enough points to win. If you are nearer to victory, keep it that way by going for straight points alone. Do not hold onto your melds and allow your opponent to gain an advantage.
